We kick off our month of December Corporate Social Responsibility theme with a look at new business structures and certifications that enable for profit businesses to do well by doing good. My guest Kelsey Nunez of Kelsey Jae Nunez LLC, is a local attorney with a penchant for social and environmental responsibility. In fact, Kelsey is so drawn to the idea of doing well by doing good, that she left her position as the director of a local environmental non-profit to apply her legal talents in the business world, advising clients on the legal structures of Benefit Corporations. Benefit Corporations are a relatively new legal business entity that allows businesses to pursue social and environmental benefit, while making a profit.
Before the advent of Benefit Corporations, corporations where legally obligated to pursue maximum profits for their shareholders. For many who want their work to have greater meaning, the constraint of a profit motive only approach to business forced them into non-profit, volunteer, or philanthropic roles. Now with the growing adoption of of the Benefit Corporation structure, businesses and their employees can pursue a line of work that gives back to their community and the environment while making a profit. Listen to the podcast below to learn more about the history and structure of the Benefit Corporation, and how it is poised to change our business culture forever.
