I spoke with Erin Sorensen from the Veterans Park Neighborhood Association about an affordable housing development plans for a lot on Whitewater Blvd in Boise’s West End. She is a board member of NeighborWorks Boise  and a housing advocate. We discussed the Sandhill Crane apartment project proposed by the Boise City/Ada County Housing Authority and their development partner Affordable Housing Solutions.

The Sandhill Crane Apartment proposal stirred up significant resistance from neighbors who say that there are several reasons the project is not a good fit as currently proposed. Erin explained the nuance behind the reasons neighbors feel this way in the context of the broader neighborhood and the investments being made to infrastructure, housing, and amenities.

JoeRSToday I speak with Joe Swenson the CEO of  NeighborWorks Boise about a new “pocket neighborhood” development in Garden City’s Live-Work-Create District called 36 Oak. NeighborWorks Boise provides housing and services for first time home buyers and is well known for their community service events Rake Up Boise and Paint the Town.

36Oak_Sgl_FamilyJoe and I will discuss the pocket neighborhood concept and how the design and location of the development and others they have in the works are focused on decreasing the cost of housing and transportation creating healthy families and communities. The “pocket neighborhoods” NeighborWorks Boise is developing have a focus on small footprints, Energy Star certification and HERS ratings, walkability, and shared community spaces.
