Like it or not our population here in southwestern Idaho is expanding rapidly. But how did we get to this point?

Todd-Shallat-200x300Dr. Todd Shallat, tenured professor of Urban Studies and Community Development at BSU and prolific author (his latest work is “Half the World: Refugees Transform the City of Trees” was released this spring) guides us through the development of the valley’s land, economy and culture over the past 30 years.

jDunn_(2)Jake returned to Boise and discussed his experience working with the architecture firm Eskew Dumez & Ripple (EDR) in New Orleans to advance sustainable and energy efficient design. He was recruited by EDR out of the University of Idaho Integrated Design Lab where he worked as an Architectural Simulation Specialist helping the private sector learn about and implement design strategies for daylighting and energy efficiency.

We were bummed to lose Jake as a co-host of Building a Greener Idaho when he left for New Orleans, but glad to see him doing important work out in the private sector designing high performance, green buildings and experiencing the culture of the Big Easy.

Today I’ll be talking with USGBC Idaho founding board member Bruce Poe with Modus Architecture. Bruce has been involved with sustainable design and the U.S. Green Building Council for quite some time here in Idaho and we’ll discuss his history of involvement and philosophy of design and where the development industry is headed.
